Frequently Asked Questions
  1. Why should I use a holistic veterinarian?
Because the average veterinarian looks at symptoms and suppresses them, leading to a weaker, less healthy pet. Holistic veterinarians see the symptom as a cry for help and answer by strengthening, supporting and balancing the pet and home, leading to better health for pet and owner.

  2. What about vaccines?
Holistic veterinarians know that vaccines are harmful and they use fewer and less frequent vaccines. Dr. Swanson can provide plain Distemper, Parvo virus, and panleukopenia vaccines, if your veterinarian won't order them. She also uses homeopathic nosodes to ease the harm of the vaccine and to fortify the body.

  3. What kinds of problems does Dr. Swanson treat?
She has successfully treated lameness, paralysis, liver, kidney and heart failure, lung and GI disorders, behavior problems, hip dysplasia, lick granulomas, stroke, disc pain, megacolon (constipation), megaesophagus, skin problems, loss of appetite, deafness, diseases (like feline leukemia, parvo virus, distemper, feline aids, FIP, kennel cough, etc.) and also undiagnosed problems.

  4. Does acupuncture hurt?
There is some pain when the needle is inserted, but pleasant brain chemicals are instantaneously released and most animals not only stand still for the treatment, but look forward to it. Some dogs even jump up on the table to get their treatment. (See photo on this page of a smiling Rottweiler during acupuncture.) Dr. Swanson usually uses small injections of a vitamin solution at the points, which is quicker and lasts longer, so weekly (vs 2-3X/week with plain needles) treatments are sufficient most often.

  5. How long do I have to wait to get an appointment with Dr. Swanson?
Once you have gone over your pet's history (see "How to contact Dr. Swanson") with Dr. Swanson by phone, your pet can be treated that day, often within hours of your call.

  6. What about my regular veterinarian?
Dr. Swanson works with your veterinarian and educates you to be a better advocate for your pet, to avoid harmful drugs and procedures. Dr. Swanson teaches you to clean your pet's teeth in a pet-friendly way. (See photo here of Dr. Swanson and her dogs LuLu and Bee, brushing their teeth.)

  7. How many acupuncture treatments are needed?
That depends on the problem. One treatment, at one point, helps 66% of cats to stop urinating out of the box, and helps pets with problems such as aggression, fear, nervous licking, and seizures, and it lasts up to 2 years. For arthritis or organ failure, weekly treatments are needed for 6 to 10 weeks and then once every 2 weeks to 9 months.

  8. How about payment?
Dr. Swanson accepts checks and cash only and will extend personal credit, but doesn't take credit cards.

  9. How do I find a holistic veterinarian near me?
Look at www.ahvma.org, www.ivas.org, and www.altvetmed.com and be sure to check the level of education and certification the veterinarian has before trusting your pet to their care.
